President’s Message

Ma. Carmen de Jesus-Meliton, MSOL, RN, CFS
PNA-NY President, 2016-2018
24TH Biennial Induction and Awards Gala
October 1, 2016 Terrace on the Park

Distinguished guests, colleagues, friends, family, ladies, and gentlemen, good evening. Welcome to the 24th Biennial Induction of the Executive Board and Officers for 2016-2018 and Awards Gala Night of the Philippine Nurses Association of New York, Inc. We celebrate another milestone in the history of this association.

PNA-NY has been in existence since 1929. I commend the leaders before me for building a very strong foundation. It is with pride, and privilege and indeed an honor to stand before you as the incoming President. I will continue PNA New York’s tradition to live its mission of advocating for the Filipino-American nurses in these very challenging times. My theme, ‘The Power of Nursing Innovation” embodies our goal to continue to support innovative changes in health care and celebrate nurses’ innovative achievements.

Nurses by nature are inquisitive and resourceful. For very good reasons. The increasing complexity and the fast pace of the healthcare system, the ongoing advancements and ever changing technology, the regulations imposed by the state and federal government, the opportunity to ask questions, ponder processes or consider alternative ways of thinking challenge nurses every day,

From working with something as simple as assistive devices to understanding the latest technology, the practice of nursing makes as resourceful. The outcomes of patient care depend upon nurses fine tuning their craft. Hence, we, nurses are innovators.

We, nurses, play critical roles and are important stake holders in the health care industry. In addition to this, we find efficient ways to promote health, prevent disease and find better ways to care and cure. As important partner of the health care workforce, PNA New York must continue to embrace existing innovations in the workplace and collaborate with other key players in order to promote positive practice environments.

NURSING is both an art and science. It is the art of caring that makes our profession unique. It is this caring attitude that inspires the spirit which makes our patients feel better and to recover quickly. The compassion, caring, patience, a gentle touch and smile are high touch qualities in a high tech world. With solid and progressive educational foundations and openness to evidence-based practices, nurses are equipped to enhance our delivery of excellent nursing care. Let the power of nursing innovations transform our healthcare delivery system so as to benefit the lives of our diverse patient populations in all areas of practice.

I would like to congratulate the PNA New York Executive Board of 2014-2016 for its accomplishments and all the recipients of Nursing Excellence Awards. With pride and excitement, please join me in welcoming the Executive Board of 2016-2018.

To all who have participated and joined me tonight, my mentors, colleagues, administrators and nursing leaders from the acute and long term care facilities, benefactors, sponsors, donors, and to my family, I offer my sincerest thanks. Your presence, indeed, makes this occasion very sweet.

Lastly, to God for His guidance and to my parents, Renato and Gloria, I know you are looking down at me now, this one is for you. Thank you, enjoy the evening, the networking, and the camaraderie.
